Reasons to start running

Miss Mevi gives you a list of 10 reasons to start running.Hello everyone!

Monday is a great day to start with new habits. If you are looking a healthy lifestyle, running is the easiest way to start with it. Here’s a list of reasons why you should start running.

1. Running improves your health
One of the biggest benefits of running is that it’s good for your health. Running is an excellent way to strengthen the heart and ensure the efficient flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body, which helps decrease your risk of a heart attack. Exercise, combined with maintaining a healthy weight, is one of the best ways to naturally reduce your blood pressure if it’s above normal. If you have high cholesterol, running can also help keep it in check. Running also improves your immune system, so your body functions are more effective and efficient at fighting off germs. Running and other weight-bearing exercises increase bone density, which can fend off osteoporosis.

2. You can lose weight
Many people start running to lose some extra pounds. As one of the most vigorous exercises out there, running is an extremely efficient way to burn calories and lose weight. If you’re already at a healthy weight, running can help you maintain it. Just make sure you don’t think running gives you a license to eat anything you want. The basic rule of weight loss — that you must burn (through life functions and exercise) more calories than you take in — still applies to runners.

3. You can run for a cause
Running can also be used as a way to contribute to society as a whole. Many races benefit charities, and some charities offer race training in exchange for fund-raising. Running for something that’s bigger than you is a great way to stay motivated to keep training and can make your races even more meaningful and fulfilling.

4. You can meet new people through running
Some runners enjoy the quiet and solitude of running on their own, but others see running time as social opportunities. Finding a running buddy or running with a group is a great way to develop a sense of community. You can set goals and accomplish them together. In addition, having a regular running buddy or running group is a great way to stay motivated to run. Some runners also share advice and motivation with other runners in online forums, such as this site’s forum . You can meet other people who share your obsession with running, celebrate your triumphs and help you overcome your obstacles.

5. You can experience something new and different
Running is a great way to expand your horizons and break away from the daily grind. The sport gives people the opportunity to explore areas of their own community or new locations, experience new physical sensations and run places they may not normally see.

6. You can train for a specific goal
Some people hate to exercise just for the sake of exercising, but with running, though, you can train for races, from 5Ks to marathons and beyond. Training for a race gives you a specific goal to work toward, which can definitely help improve your motivation to run.

7. Running improves your energy levels
When you’re feeling sluggish or tired, running is a great way to boost your energy. Runners who run in the morning report that they have improved energy levels during the day. Combining running with a healthful diet will help improve your energy levels even more.

8. Running will help you feel good about yourself
Regular runners report an increase in their confidence and self-esteem, and the self-esteem benefits of running are increased if you set a specific goal, such as running a 5K or even a marathon, and accomplish it.

9. Running is versatile and inexpensive
Running requires very little equipment, and it can be done almost anywhere. All you need is a good pair of running shoes, and you can head out your door to go for a run. From city sidewalks to wooded trails, there are plenty of places for runners to explore — at no cost. If you travel a lot, it’s easy to pack your running shoes and run while you’re on the road.

10. Running can help with stress relief
Running — as with many forms of exercise — is a great cure for stress, emotional strain and even mild depression. Research has shown that healthy adults who exercise regularly are generally happier than those who don’t.

Have you decided already to start running? I really hope so!

Enjoy your week!

Benefits of cold water showers

Miss Mevi te recomienda tomar duchas heladas!

Good morning everyone!

Today is the Earth Day! And since our instructor wanted to celebrate it, they turned off the boiler!

At first we all were a little upset, but then we realized that we went out happier, we felt much more energized. And there’s a reason for that, here’s a list of benefits of taking cold showers.

  1. Improved blood circulation – showering with cold water is in going to improve your blood circulation between organs and skin considerably. With cold temperatures, blood flows to your organs for protection to keep them the warmest. Warm water sends the blood rushing to the skin so alternating between cold and hot (as I will detail later) can be a great way of improving your blood circulation. If you are just beginning, it might be best to stick to a cold shower only.
  2. Improved mood – it is hard to quantify mood and indeed it is altered by many things. As my Unbalanced Brain series indicates, there are scientific reasons for many mood disorders. Cold showers can stimulate noradrenaline secretion in the brain, which is associated with improving mood disorders like depression.
  3. Increased immune strength – unlike what your mother told you, spending time in the cold can actually increase your immune strength. Those who take cold showers typically exhibit higher white blood cell counts as well as higher concentrations of plasma, T helper cells, and lymphocytes.
  4. Increased testosterone levels – I’m always looking for healthy and natural ways of increasing my testosterone levels. It’s a boon in the gym, it makes me feel more motivated in general, and manipulating it naturally is the safest long term method I can think of. When I heard that cold showers can vastly increase testosterone production, I was even more thrilled. Not only is testosterone elevated during the shower, but throughout the day as well.
  5. Metabolic advantages – from a body composition perspective, cold showers are also incredibly useful. The cold water induces an increased metabolic rate. The cold temperatures force your body to re-regulate the body temperature continually, which utilizes many calories. Mark mentions that an evolutionarily retained adaptation to cold water exposure is a layer of protective fat. Therefore, get your cold shower short and sweet and then get out. Longer exposure to cold therapy is not necessarily better.
  6. Better breathing – you may hyperventilate as soon as you get in a cold shower, which is a pretty natural response. However, the panic will only make the experience worse so it is in your best interest to breathe calmly and deeply. Few people breathe deeply so you may need cold showers to help you do so.
  7. Cold showers burn fat – when fat is activated due to extreme cold, it burns calories to keep you warm, which could provide a helpful assist in your weight loss plan.

Which one do you want to take advantage of? Now you know it, let’s start taking cold showers!

Until the next time!

How to persuade others to live a healthy lifestyle.

Miss Mevi tells you how to encourage a healthy lifestyleHello and happy weekend!

I’m pretty sure you have been tempted to persuade and convince others to live a healthy lifestyle like yours. I understand, you feel so good living like that, that you want everyone else to feel the same!

But instead of persuade others you might cause the opposite effect. People say that you can inspire much better with your example instead of telling them what to do. So these are some recommendations when you want someone to adopt a healthy lifestyle:

1. Stay Away From Severity
Use praise and positive reinforcement instead of strictness or extreme restrictions. When you see a person you want to help engaging in healthy habits, draw attention to these behaviors in a positive and encouraging way. Expect that change may not come about immediately, but over time you can help a person have a better relationship with food. Remember there’s only so much you can do and you cannot force a person to live healthy.

2. Allow For Indulgences
People occasionally slip up while trying to live healthy, which does not mean all attempts at being health-oriented are derailed. When trying to persuade someone to eat more nutritiously, encourage moderation. Discourage using fattening junk foods as a reward, however, as this can prompt habits of emotional eating.

3. Point out the many benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
These include losing weight and having more energy. Harvard School of Public Health notes eating a healthy, balanced daily diet and avoiding processed meats and other unhealthy foods also reduces the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers.

4. Lead by example.
The best reason you can give someone for adopting a healthy lifestyle is doing it yourself and letting her see how it has helped you. Another dimension of this leading by example is talking about what you’ve learned about yourself in the process and the benefits that may not be visible on the surface.

Finally, don’t expect others to make drastic changes in their lives. They must really commit with the idea of living healthier before making a real change in their current habits.

Hope this can help you!

Until the next time.

What’s the best time to eat avocado?

Miss Mevi tells you the best time to eat avocadoGood morning!

Everyone who knows me also knows that I love avocados. Sometimes they have asked me what’s the best time to eat avocado. Well, here’s the answer: You can eat avocado at ANY TIME! No, I’m not joking, and here it’s why:

  • Due to it’s good fat and proteins it’s important for setting your blood-sugar pattern for the rest of the day.
  • Due to it’s oleic acid content you must add it to your afternoon meal and it will help you feel satisfied longer.
  • And since it has lots of fiber, eating avocado during the evening will help the digestion process.

What’s your favorite time to eat avocado?

Until the next time!

Holiday decorations

Hello everyone!

During this season I visited some friends and family and I loved these decorations, they look very nice and are easy to make.

If you still want to complete your christmas tree, these both are very good options. The pine cone ornaments are made in only three minutes each.

tmp01Just buy some jute. Cut a piece long enough to attach to the pine cone, yet still fit around a tree branch.

tmp02Then glue the two ends to the top of the pine cone. Just be sure that it hangs nicely once it’s attached.

tmp03Then tie a bow out of some ribbon (mine is beige satin ribbon, 1.5 inches wide). I found that attaching the bow to the jute actually allows the bow to hang a little nicer.

tmp04

Cut the ends of the ribbon at a diagonal, whatever length you like.

tmp06

Finally heat seal the ends of your ribbon with a lighter. You are done!tmp08

Another option is Glitter Twine Ball Ornaments. Although this is very easily done, it takes a little more time to get it done. You just need some balloons, a glue gun, jute twine, mod podge and clinging wrap.

Just blow up a balloon. Make sure it’s circular. Wrap balloon in cling wrap. This is a necessary step; I tried it without the cling wrap, and while the balloon detached from the twine eventually, the dried excess Mod Podge detached from the balloon, as well, leaving an ugly webbing in the nooks and crannies. Don’t skip this step!

Wrap jute twine around the balloon. Douse your twine-wrapped balloon in Glitter Mod Podge. Let it dry.

Once it’s dried, pop the balloon. This is the funnier part. ;O) Attach a wire ornament hanger or tie on some gold thread. You’re done!

tmp07

Hope you enjoy this.

Have a wonderful holiday all of you! Merry Christmas!
